Drop text effect

This flash tutorial will teach you how to create a drop text effect. The result gives the effect of text falling from above. This tutorial is fairly complicated so be sure to read it a few times, before attempting.

Drop text effect

Step 1

Open a new Flash document.

Step 2

On the timeline insert the same number of layers as your piece of text. For example my text is “ILIKE2FLASH” so I will have 11 new layers. Now, name your layers accordingly by clicking on the layer name, it should look like below:

Step 3

On the timeline select your first letter eg I and using the text tool (t) type your letter on the
stage.

Convert your letter into a symbol by pressing F8 give your symbol an appropriate name, check movie clip button and click ok.

Now select the second letter on the timeline and type your letter on the stage and convert your letter into a symbol.
Repeat this for the rest of your letters.

You should now have all your letters on the stage, all your letters in the library and the first frame of each layer should be a key frame.

Step 4

On the timeline select your first letter and create a key frame (F6) at frame 5 & 10. Then move onto your next letter and create a key frame (F6) at frame 10 & 15. Repeat this for all your letters increasing the increment by a factor of five for each layer.

Once you have done this, insert frames (F5) to fill up the rest of your layers to match the last letter. It should look like something below depending on how many letters you have.

So each layer should now have three key frames.

Step 5

Now select the second key frame of each layer in turn. And move the corresponding letter on the stage upwards, about a letter length.

Create a motion between the second the third key frame of each layer, by right clicking selecting “create motion tween”. And then delete the first key frame of each layer. Your time line should look like below:

Step 6

On the timeline select the first key frame of the first layer. And using the selection tool (V) click the letter on the stage and change the alpha colour to 0%.
Now repeat this for all the letters.

Step 7

Test your movie Ctrl + Enter.

You should now have drop text effect.
