Mask text effect

This flash tutorial will teach you have to create a mask text effect. The results give the effect of text being slowly revealed by the masked object. This effect is very useful and can be used to create many different mask effects.

Mask text effect

Step 1

Open a new Flash document.
Using the Text tool (t) type your message on the stage. Your can use whatever font type and size you wish.




Step 2

Using the selection tool (v) select your text message.
Then convert your text message into a symbol by pressing F8. Give your symbol an appropriate name, check movie clip and click ok.




Step 3

On the timeline insert a new layer called “mask”. This layer contains your masked object.
Using the rectangle tool (R) drag a rectangle shape before your text message.
Convert your mask object (rectangle shape) into a symbol by pressing F8. Give your symbol an appropriate name, check movie clip and click ok.


Step 4

On the timeline insert a key frame (F6) on the 30th frame on the mask layer. And then insert a frame (F5) on the 30th frame on layer 1.



Using the selection tool (v) select the 30th frame on the mask layer. Then select the free transform tool (Q). Hold the alt key and drag your mask object to the right, until your text message cannot be seen. Your mask object will not be seen when the mask layer is applied.




Step 5

Create a motion tween in between the 1st and 30th frame on the mask layer by right clicking in between and selecting “Create motion tween”.

Right click and the layer name “mask” and select Mask from the drop down menu. Your timeline should look like below:



Step 6

Test your movie clip Ctrl + enter.




You should now have a mask text effect.
